John Ray Seymour, age 99, of Elizabethtown, was born in Magnolia, Kentucky in 1924, and passed away Monday, January 1, 2024, at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown getting to see 100 years.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, he managed the shoe department for Joplin and Lanz before owning and operating Seymour’s Shoes. He lived independently and drove his car all his life, enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his family. He was a Coast Guard Veteran of WWII, helping deliver the Marines to Iwo Jima and was a witness to its historic flag raising.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise “Lois” Elliott Seymour; his parents, Henry Abner and Sudie L. Thomas Seymour; a son-in-law, Steve McFeeters; five sisters, Anna Doyle, Stella Kessler, Juanita Lawson, Ginny Rose Murphy and Mary Miller and three brothers, William, Claude W. and Henry Lewis Seymour, Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Dena (Bob) Smith of Fairview, TN and Monica McFeeters of Baldwyn, MS, a son, Heath (LeeAnn) Seymour of Louisville; a sister, Nola “Jean” Peterson of Louisville; five grandchildren, Cessna Kelley, Seth Ian McFeeters, Krista Marie Davis, Josie Seymour and Macie Seymour; nine great-grandchildren and numerous precious nieces and nephews.
A brief service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 6, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Red Hill Cemetery.
Visitation begins after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
