Betty Lee Heady Hornback, age 78, of Elizabethtown, passed away, Friday, September 23, 2022, at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown.
Born in Hodgenville, Kentucky on October 8, 1943. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. Betty is a graduate of LaRue County High School where she was a cheerleader and active 4-H Club member. She earned her BS in Home Economics and MS in Education from Western Kentucky University also achieving a Rank I in Counseling. Betty paused her education to marry Barney Hornback on July 21, 1962. She started a family and was the mother of five children. As a homemaker, she was active in the Elizabethtown Junior Women’s Club and was named the Rookie of the Year in 1964. She was the chairperson of nearly every standing committee and held the offices of 1st and 2nd Vice President, Secretary and Parliamentarian.
She was a devoted Home Economics teacher and was the Elizabethtown City Schools Teacher of the Year in 1981. Many people can sew on a button, make an apron or pillow, sort laundry or cook an omelet because Betty was their teacher. She truly loved teaching. After her retirement, she started an antiques business and was a national expert in Kentucky Derby Glasses. One of her passions was playing bridge. She was an accomplished player and could always be counted to make a fourth. Another passion was for color, she loved wearing bright colors to match her ever-present bright smile and in case you were wondering, that bright pink nail polish which was her signature is OPI Strawberry Margarita.
Betty was baptized at Nolin Baptist Church and was a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church for sixty years. A seminal event in Betty’s life was her heart transplant in 2000. She lived another twenty-two years after her transplant.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Zack T. “Buddy” Heady Jr. and Madora
Bennett Heady; a brother, David T. Heady and a nephew, Jon Heady
Betty is survived by her husband of 60 years, Barney Hornback; two daughters, Bethany Langdon of Midway and Brooke Hornback of Elizabethtown; three sons, Brian (Kaki) Hornback of Elizabethtown, Barry (Marla) Hornback of Jeffersonville, IN and Brady Hornback of Louisville; three grandchildren, Zachary Langdon, Abigail Hornback and Jasmine Todd; a sister-in-law, Beverly Heady and two nephews, Dan Heady and Matt Heady.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, September 26, at Hardin Memorial Park in Elizabethtown with Bro. Emory Riley officiating.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville.
